Petr Slavík
wildlife photographer

It started as a game. He said that we would hitchhike to Africa. Nothing unusual, but the year was 1990, and in post-communist Czechoslovakia it sounded like science fiction. He went. Just as he travelled from the volcanoes in southern Chile to Amazonia. He wandered and he loved it. Then, for his first trip to Africa, he borrowed a camera; he wanted to climb Kilimanjaro. He played around again and then had an exhibition opening of his photographs from the trip. In fact it was a party for a few friends. The pictures were liked and so he began to learn to photograph.
Today he is a winner of several international awards, including a gold medal from the biggest international photographic salon TRIERENBERG SUPER CIRCUIT. His photographs were part of THE WORLD’S BEST IMAGES 2014. He travels all around the world to record the last remnants of wilderness. He dedicates himself mainly to carnivores and endangered species. You can regularly find his images and reportages in Czech magazines and prestigious international titles. The results of his playing at being a photographer have appeared in the BBC Wildlife Magazine, Discover Magazine, Digital Camera, N-Photo Magazine, The Daily Mail and a number of other publications. He’s never forgotten why he is doing it. The proceeds from the auctions of his photographs support preservation projects of Czech scientists in various parts of the world and the breeding of endangered species in zoological gardens.
He is the author of books The Wild Hearts, Close Encounters and the co-author of The Wild planet. He is currently working on a film series In the Footprint of a Predator which talks about the adventures of a wildlife photographer looking for the biggest carnivores on our planet. He is the Nikon ambassador for the Czech Republic.
